The Messenger of Allah (SAW) says in a hadith, “I was only sent to complete good morals.” Our Prophet (SAW), who says in a hadith, “My Lord has given me manners, He has educated me in such a beautiful way,” is at the pinnacle of etiquette because the instructor is Allah (SWT). This is expressed by Almighty God (SWT) in the Holy Quran as, “Indeed, in the Messenger of God there is a good example for you for those who hope in God and the Last Day and remember Him much.” (Ahzab, 21) When our mother, Hazrat Aisha (RA), was asked, “What was the character of the Messenger of God (SAW)?” she replied, “Do you not read the Quran? His character was the Quran.” Although the first commandment of Islam is to acquire knowledge, the purpose of its revelation is to “complete morality,” making good manners necessary before knowledge. This is clearly evident in Yunus Emre’s lines, “I sought and sought in the circles of knowledge / Knowledge has been left behind, but good manners, but good manners.” In other words, good manners, even before knowledge, constitute the first condition of spiritual maturity.
