Hilya is a decorative art form developed by Ottoman calligraphers in the 17th century. While literal meanings of "ornament," "adornment," and "beauty," hilye also carries meanings such as "form," "adjective," and "creation." A total of eight sections, the hilye consists of four main parts: the "chief position," "navel," "sash," and "skirt." The other four sections serve as complements to the main sections. The chief position; located at the top of the hilye, this section contains the Basmala. The Sash; this section contains a short verse about Muhammad. This verse is usually found in verse 107 of Surah Anbiya, meaning "We sent only as a mercy to the worlds." However, in some hilyahs, the hadith "levlâke levlâk lema halakatu'l-eflâk," meaning "O my beloved, if it were not for you, I would not have created the universe," was also included in this section. The navel is the section where the longest section of the hilyah is placed, and is round or oval. It is the section containing narratives about Muhammad. The skirt is the continuation of the hilyah text that does not fit within the navel. The last line of the text includes the name of the hilyah writer and the date the hilyah was written. The other sections, these four sections outside the main sections, are in the form of four circles around the navel.
