Tughra is a symbol or signature that includes the sultan's name and epithet. Tughra is a branch of calligraphy that has been written by master calligraphers for centuries. In Turkish, it means a special sign containing the sultan's name, a signature of the sultan. The original word, tugra, is in the Oghuz dialect and means the printed signature of the sultan. The first tugra used by Orhan Gazi consists of the expression Orhan bin Osman. The first of the tugras is dated 1324 and the other is dated 1348. A tughra belonging to Sultan Osman Gazi I has not been found anywhere to date. Therefore, there are 36 Ottoman sultans, but only 35 Ottoman sultan tughras. The section where the sultan's name and his father's name are written is called the throne, rostrum, or sere. The section extending from here to the left, from bottom to top, and consisting of two concentric curves, is called the beyze or sanjak.
